If learning martial arts (or anything) is limited to the series of techniques or ideas within it, and we don’t allow them to transcend the art, we live and love in a shallow puddle of art-specific intelligence, vulnerable and fleeting.
A bullet point list of techniques or series of belts or career specific accomplishments can stand tall and pretty but falls easily when tested against the outside world. We learn so much more from a deeper pond of wisdom than an isolated shallow puddle of art-specific intelligence. The appearance of a wide but shallow puddle can be tempting, but provides no depth of understanding and little chance for growth.
Go deep in whatever we do, as it should and must infiltrate into all other areas of life. Do this or fall victim to fad attachment and broken lifelong new years’ resolutions.
